TREAT OTHERS JUST AS YOU WANT TO BE TREATED / LUKE 6:31

Welcome to Birch Class

This term (Summer 2024), our enquiry project is:

'What can we tell from a portrait?'

This project has an art focus and is all about exploring portraits.  We'll look carefully at portraits to see what we can tell about a person from them before learning to create our own.  Our focus will then turn towards the portraits created by Pablo Picasso.  We'll investigate his artwork before creating our own portraits in his style.  In history we will compare and contrast three queens: Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

Below you will find our project planner with further details about this term's learning:

Social Action Project Update

Birch Class are interested in the work of Crawley Open House after finding out that that is where our Harvest gifts are sent.  During our ‘What makes a home?’ project we learned that people don’t always have somewhere to call home for all sorts of reasons.  The children liked the idea of working with Crawley Open House to help those without a home.  After half-term we will talk as a class and decide together how we think we can help.  We look forward to being in touch soon with the children’s plans.

Important information

  • Our PE lessons this term are on a Tuesday (Drumba) and on a Thursday outside with Mr McCarthy.
  • Please bring a filled water bottle to school everyday and a waterproof coat as we will endeavor to go outside at break times whatever the weather.

Home Learning

Please read with your child everyday from their Read Write Inc book and record the reading in their reading record.  The children on Read Write Inc have a bookmark for their book band with tricky words to also practise reading nightly.  Inside the reading record you will see that there are tasks to be completed to help develop your child's reading skills.  Those children children who have finished the Read Write Inc programme have a gold band reading book to start with and then progress up through the book bands.

There will be a maths task set on a Friday which will link to our work in class.  The task will be sent home in a home learning book and should be completed in the book and returned to school by the following Friday ready for the next task.

Each week the children will have 8 focus spelling words to learn taken from the Read Write Inc spelling scheme.  We will teach the spelling rule in class and practise it everyday ready for a quick test on a Friday.  It would be great if the children could also practise the words at home to reinforce the spelling pattern we are learning.  If your child can already confidently spell the word they should write it in a sentence.  Sentences must start with a capital letter but could end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.  The spelling grid was sent home on 15.04.24  Spelling practise can be recorded in the home learning book.
