Welcome to Birch Class
This term (Autumn 2024), our enquiry project is:
'What makes a hero?'
This project has a humanities focus and is all about making the children aware of heroes in the world today and building heroes of the future. We'll look at the qualities and attributes of a hero and research heroes from the past and see how their work has impacted our lives today. There will be opportunities to discover the heroes in our community.
Already the children have worked hard together to create a fantastic heroscape display in the classroom which they are very proud of. Please feel free to pop in at pick-up time so your child can show you the display.

Paper Chain STEM Challenge
To help them settle into Year 2 Birch Class were set a paper chain challenge. They had to work in teams of three to create the longest paper chain they could using only selotape, scissors and three pieces of A3 sugar paper. There was a time limit of 30 minutes. The teams all worked brilliantly together and we all had lots of fun. Here are some photos of us busy at work.

Important information
- Our PE lessons this term are on a Tuesday (yoga) and on a Thursday (ball skills) with Mr McCarthy.
- Please bring a filled water bottle to school everyday and a waterproof coat or sun hat as we will endeavor to go outside at break times whatever the weather.
- School uniform and PE kit needs to be named please so we can quickly reunite stray items with their owner.
Home Learning
Please read with your child everyday from their Read Write Inc or book band book and record the reading in their reading record. The children on Read Write Inc have a bookmark for their book band with tricky words to also practise reading nightly. Inside the reading record you will see that there are tasks to be completed to help develop your child's reading skills. Those children who have finished the Read Write Inc programme have a gold band reading book to start with and then progress up through the book bands.
There will be a maths task set on a Friday which will link to our work in class. The task will be sent home in a home learning book and should be completed in the book and returned to school by the following Friday ready for the next task.
After Christmas the children will also be given weekly spellings to learn.
